One Thing

When is the last time you did one thing? I mean that as in, you did ONE thing- at a TIME. Today, I realized I’m not sure I even know how to do that anymore. After my typical Friday-at-home routine of breakfast-clean up-random gift shopping-Sesame Street-snack-nap-laundry-return phone calls-share a Beyonce Instagram post-eat something, I saw what I was doing. It’s true that I don’t know how to “stop” or “relax” these days, but what bothered me more was that I was sitting in front of the TV, eating a deliciously sweet grapefruit, mindlessly watching some Raymour and Flanigan commercial. It hit me that I was shoving a deliciously sweet grapefruit in my face while watching a commercial as the clock ticked down until my next move. I was not enjoying the grapefruit, nor was I planning a trip to Raymour and Flanigan (note: this is not an ad post for Raymour and Flanigan, though I would gladly accept money or free furniture for all the traffic this blog will surely bring.)

Then, I started thinking about how actually watching TV is an art form in itself now. When’s the last time you watched a show/news program/sports game without also simultaneously Tweeting/Facebooking/Googling? If you are under age 60, I bet it’s been a while. We aren’t even aware of it. I think a lot about how it seems I have no time and enjoy nothing, even a TV show I used to enjoy because I am barely even watching it anymore. I can’t separate myself from doing at least one other thing at the same time whether it’s playing on my phone, folding laundry, or (usually, forever and ever) cleaning something. I think not being able to fully dedicate myself to one task or experience is hurting everything, and it’s something I’d like to make more of a practice.

Next time you’re eating- look at that beautiful ruby red grapefruit and think, THAT IS A BEAUTIFUL GRAPEFRUIT. Then STOP! Do NOT TAKE A PHOTO OF THE GRAPEFRUIT. Do NOT post it on Instagram! Stop that! Just look at it, and taste it, and smell it, and smile because you are enjoying a beautiful quiet moment with your perfect grapefruit that doesn’t require a filter. I think if we can all do this a little more, we’ll see a lot more of what we’re missing.

  1. This ties in nicely with the concept of mindfulness. It’s all about really FOCUSING on what you’re doing, being conscious of it. It’s hard to do when you’re juggling two/three/five things at once. I’ve tried to be more mindful lately and focus on one task at a time. It’s hard sometimes!

    1. That’s exactly it. It almost feels impossible at times to truly “do” one thing, focus on it, enjoy it, feel it! I don’t think American society spends enough time teaching this to young people.
