This Is It

The 2013 baby boom is in full swing, with the latest expectant mama, Halle Berry. Here’s a complete list, for those with competing due dates.

Look Who’s Popping (IVillage) – I still sometimes have to look up Shiloh Pitt’s birthday, to find out how old my friend’s son is.

MONDAY SMALL PLATE
I’m back, for you, my pretties. I took a short (really..2 day) hiatus to do some end of break/wedding celebrating and here I am, dedicated as ever, typing this post from an iPhone at the bar. I am at the only bar in Ann Arbor with a seat facing a TV. The Final Four ends tonight. It all comes down to this. Brackets have been shattered, dreams have been shelved or polished, and tonight, my sports fan losing streak has the potential to end. My entire Buffalonian life has been shadowed by our sports teams’ inability to seal the deal. I don’t know what it feels like to pour out onto the street and hug strangers wearing identical clothing, wave flags, and sing fight songs. Tonight may be the night. Or not. Either way, I’m a seasoned professional. If we win, I can check it off the bucket list. If we lose, I will win money from my bracket. MuHahahahaha. GO BLUE!

Why They’ll Win – Michigan vs Louisville (NCAA) - Great news. Wolverines are underdogs. That’s all I know.

Slow News Day Small Plates of Love, Purses, and a Countdown to the Final Four

Happy Anniversary to some of my favorite couples today, including:

Beyonce, Jay-Z Turn Heads in Havana, Cuba (Wonderwall) - It’s no mistake that 4/4 is good luck.  Happy anniversary to all the lovas out there.

THURSDAY SMALL PLATES:

Maybe it’s just because I’m on “vacation,” but it seems like a slow news week out there.  I mean, besides obvious things that we don’t need to be worrying about on this blog, there seems to be a shortage of fluffy gossip news.  Small plates tonight, and I’ll try to leave you with more substantial samples for the weekend.

Final Four 2013 Strengths and Weaknesses of Each Semi-Finalist (Bleacher Report) – It’s the calm before the storm, and we are beyond psyched in my two home states for Michigan and Syracuse to duke (haha, pun intended) it out on Saturday night.  Here is the fact rollout for them, plus those other teams.

Accessories and Handbag Trends for Spring 2013 (MSN Living) – We have a bright future in our midst, if the current blast of hues are any indication.  I will have to do my best to warm up to orange.

Fendi for you, Target for me.

Easter Bunnies That Will Haunt Your Dreams, Elite 8 Excitement, and Easter Food Galore

This is one of the best things to happen to me recently, and I think you’ll agree.

40 Easter Bunnies More Terrifying Than a Man Coming Back From the Dead (Democratic Underground) – We literally needed a box of tissues to dry our faces off, from all the tears of hilariousness that fell from our eyes.  Please, do yourself a favor and read the captions, too.  If it’s the only thing you do today, click on this link.

Image

It’s hard to believe, but this isn’t even the best one!

SATURDAY HELPINGS:

Wow.  What an exciting finish for the Wolverines last night.  Now a part of the Elite 8… I’ll get you caught up below.  Also, you’re probably preparing for an Easter family gathering tomorrow if you’re into that stuff.  I’ll hit you with some helpful Easter samples to keep you going.  If you happen to be dicking around on Facebook this weekend, send some LIKE right HERE.  You donate to my Easter basket, I’ll donate to yours.  Somehow.

Complete Predictions and Results from NCAA Elite 8 (Bleacher Report) – There’s probably about 25 people that even care about this anymore, if their brackets are still in it to win it.  And the entire state of Michigan.  And Ohio.  And Western and Central New York.

Image

Boo ya!

How to Make the Ultimate Ham on your Grill (Huffington Post) – Holiday dinner ham doesn’t get me that excited anymore, but getting it all glazy and crispy on a grill does peak my interest for it again.  Grab a 2 liter jug of Giacobazzi and you’ve got Easter dinner.

Almond Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies (The Wannabe Chef) – Whether you’re gluten free, pretending to be gluten free, or just want to feel a little less disgusting after cramming your face with Easter candy, give this cookie recipe a shot.

Top 10 Easter Brunches Across the US (Cooking Channel Blog) - Can you tell I haven’t had lunch yet?  It’s like grocery shopping on an empty stomach, without a list, with someone else’s credit card.

Avocado Egg Salad (Two Peas & Their Pod) – This looks a little on the unappetizingly green side, but bear with me, I know it tastes amazing.  I am one of those weirdos who loves hard boiled eggs, and egg salad, and anything else interesting you can mix in there.  Just close your eyes, and take a bite.

Harley Pasternak’s Advice For Those Working Out, but Not Losing Weight (People) - When you’re done with the above, you’ll probably need this.

Late Night Sampler – Best Celebrity Photo Bombs, 50 Episodes of GH, and So Long Babs

You need to know this for tomorrow, if you’re one of the smart people who’ve stuck with this show for 50 YEARS.

General Hospital to Air 50 Classic Episodes (SoapNet) – Starting with it’s 1963 premier episode… here is the entire list.  Set your DVR, or just deal with it while your wife, girlfriend, or mother has her trip down memory lane this weekend.  Leave her alone.

THURSDAY (LATE NIGHT) HELPINGS:

On the 45 minute car ride home from our friend’s birthday party, I felt pretty great.  Spring break has arrived, one fun night under the belt, a week ahead of my favorite people + relaxation + exercise + a wedding, so on and so forth.  By the time we got gas and arrived home, I had to coax myself into writing this late Sampler.  My bed looks so good right now.  This will be quick and dirty.

Full Sweet 16 Predictions and Results (Bleacher Report) – At post time, Indiana has LOST and Syracuse has WON.  Marquette is continuing on.  All kinds of crazy BS.  Get up to date, and go cry in the shambles of your once heroic bracket choices.

Barbara Walters Set to Retire (CNN) – It’s still just a rumor, but it’s about time, Babs.  83 is probably a good time to bow out, which you may agree with if you’ve seen any of her recent work on The View.  Everyone loves Barbara, but she says the silliest, most out of touch things now, frequently.  Then again, so does Elisabeth.

Best Celebrity Photo Bombs (Hello Giggles) – Always a good time.

Classic.

Small Plates of Will Smith’s Bad Decisions, Top Airport Dining Spots, and a Cinderella Story

Who/where/how/why is Florida Gulf Coast University, you might ask? Here’s what you need to know about this year’s March Madness Cinderella story.

A Detailed Guide to Florida Gulf Coast, The Best School on Earth (SBNation) – Annnnd I’ve got my underdog back.

MONDAY SMALL PLATES:

It’ll be a quickie today, not because I’m so busy, but because I’m so un-busy with a nasty little headache. Hope everyone’s Monday was tolerable.

Will Smith Turned Down “Django Unchained” (CNN) - What an idiot. Everyone loves Will Smith, including myself, (duh, Independence Day) but this makes him sound like a real d-bag. Can anyone really imagine him handling that heavy, no constant punch line material, anyways? No.

Image

Andrew Zimmern’s Top Airport Dining Spots (Eatocracy) – I have a soft spot for a wine bar I can’t remember the name of at Dulles, and a sushi place right here in Detroit at DTW, but this is a good list to have in your carry-on. Did I mention 3.5 months until I leave for summer in Italy?

March Madness Update

Let the games begin! I went with obvious bracket name choices: Deez Gonzagas and God I Hate This, respectively. Good luck, sports fans!

Bow Down to Glitter Bombs, Alcoholic Bananas, and Bracketology

I’m sorry.  I can’t help it.  #DoubleFeature:

Snapshot: Beyonce for Shape Magazine April 2013 (The Fashion Bomb Blog) – My lady love is at it again.  Some call it overexposure.  I call it amazeballs.  Tomato/tomahtoe.

Beyonce | I Am : Bow Down/I Been On (iam.beyonce.com) – So when I saw the “bow down” picture posted on Bey’s Facebook and Instagram yesterday, even I thought, “K, that’s a little much.”  I got it in a marketing sense- with the whole “trailer” for her new tour and such, but what I didn’t spend enough time looking at was that it was a link to her new song ‘Bow Down’, which I think I may be in love with, but when it switches to ‘I Been On’, it gets a little weird.  Listen here!

MONDAY HELPINGS:

I woke up with uuber anxiety today, for no particular reason.  I actually had stress dreams about not turning in a high school assignment, one about not having the appropriate gluten free items in my lunch box, and something else rather laughable that I can’t remember now.  I think I have to take my own advice and really get into that meditation tonight!  So without further adieu..

Caffeine: How Much is too Much? (Detroit Free Press) - I wondered this myself today when I went for my 2nd coffee, usually an optional treat, today was a must.

Lindsay Lohan Gets Glitter Bombed Arriving Late to Court (laist.com) – That is probably the most magical thing that has happened to her in years.

8 Things You Can Turn Into Alcohol (Huffington Post) – What?  You’re not ready to think about alcohol again yet?  Don’t be silly.  While you may not have a Monkey Puzzle Tree in your backyard, you can probably find yourself some parsnips or bananas and get to work.

Image

This shhhh is….

March Madness 2013 Predictions (inthecapital.com) - I am less worried about my bracket picks, and more concerned about the fabulous names my brackets will have.  In my group, that is a win- best bracket name.  It may be the only win I have a shot at.

7 Foods to Fight Stress (mindbodygreen.com) - Dark chocolate is number one.  No mistake there.  I know what I’ll be filling my lunch box (both real and dreamed) with tomorrow!

Happy March, Happy Hour

March is upon us AND it’s Friday! Here’s why this is such a good thing:

  • closer to Spring.
  • closer to Daylight Saving Time.
  • More sunshine (remember last St. Patty’s day? Gorgeous!
  • St. Patty’s Day!
  • March Madness.
  • Early tax returns in your bank.
  • Green stuff. Green is bright.
  • A chance to reevaluate your New Year’s resolutions. And actually do them.
  • Still plenty of time before you have to put on a bathing suit!
  • As you see, March is a million times better (or at least 9 times) than the other winter months. In like a LION baby! Yeah! Carpe diem!

Love In The Lanes, A Detroit Love Affair, And Other Lost Cities

Good morning sunshines!  I mean, afternoon.  I did not leave my bed for an inappropriate amount of time.  It was good.  Although I seem to be sick AGAIN.  Pretty ticked about that.  I emerged and was treated to this gem, which I believe is the pinnacle of good marketing.

ESPN “Love the Lanes” ft. Busta Rhymes and Mariah Carey – This. Is. Amazing.  For one, I forgot about this song, and it’s even better in 2013.  Two, I really, really want to watch bowling now.  That’s a first for me.

    Image

    SATURDAY HELPINGS:

My late start was thanks to another unforgettable night in Detroit including good friends, a concert, and some imbibing.  I’ll share more about that later, but it’s reminding me what a great town Detroit is, despite its never ending struggles.  I find that I relate to it so much more than Ann Arbor.  I like the blue collar feel, I like a bunch of people in one city that are united in the fight and like to commiserate together.  I might have to move closer if I remain in the state of Michigan.

The ‘Other’ Corktown (Eat It Detroit) – My new love affair with Detroit is going to need a lot of guidance.  I don’t know much about the best nooks and crannies (some because I’m scared of them).  It’s not really our fault that we’re conditioned to be scared of what we don’t know, especially a place like the D, but I find I enjoy my adventures there every time.  This is an awesome site with the best of what’s going down in the Motor City.  I will frequent it often.

Death of the Foodstagram (Mashable) - I got this tip from the Eat it Detroit blog, crazy!  Turns out some restaurants are now banning customers from taking food pics.  I get it, it’s kind of rude in the same way it’s rude to sit texting at the dinner table.  I am always embarrassed to do it (thus my hurried, shadowed photography) and feel like it distracts from the general good time flow of a meal, but still- let’s not get our panties in a twist! I still love you NYC.

Top 10 Lost Cities (Listverse) – Relief!  Detroit, nor Buffalo makes this list!  Instead, some of the more exotic lost cities of the world, and I’m pleased to say I’ve visited at least one, and my husband has visited another! (*UPDATE- he informs me he’s visited THREE of these locations.  How dare I!)  The perks of being married to an archaeologist…

How Argyle Became Part of North Carolina’s Jerseys (The Dagger) – Something weird happened to me.  I’ve come to like and want to follow college basketball.  I actually (shh) find it more entertaining than college football.  Maybe it’s the upcoming brackets that gives us something to look forward to or my love of interactive sports games.  Anyways, I recommend this site because it gives you the rankings and info. with a side of fashion, stories about people getting their face stomped on, etc.  I need variety.
