Happy Hour – The Art of Staying Awake

Folks, I’ve been slacking here. Not because I want to, but because I’m doing things like gut-cleaning my home until after midnight and working on the ever-expanding to do list. It’s all worth it come Friday. Today is an especially happy Friday because of the return of my favorite coworker and the arrival of Jack and Diane for their last weekend in Ann Arbor. You heard right. My parents are the iconic, ‘Jack and Diane’ from the song. Why not? They could be. You don’t know. In honor of another busy weekend that is focused on anything but sleep..I give you another kind of happy hour.

Espresso Chart with Caffeine Breakdown (Huffington Post) – I need all of these today. And I need a printout so I don’t feel embarrassed at Starbucks.

Best Coffee Cocktails (Cosmopolitan) - C’mon. You know I had to include a little somethin’, somethin’. It’s Friday!

Conquering Legends of the Hidden Temple With Sustainable Beer and a Fancy Latte

This is exactly the right way to start your week:

5 Key Moves to Winning ‘Legends of the Hidden Temple’ (Thought Catalog) – If you were busy doing something other than watching ‘Legends of the Hidden Temple’ on Nickelodeon in the 90′s, then you were either cooler than me, or too damn old.  Just kidding.  I’m trying to be sensitive with age comments now that I’m getting eerily close to that next decade.  Sorry.

(*Update- I was getting some of my nostalgia mixed up with Guts.  Remember the Crag?  Did anyone ever conquer that thing?)

MONDAY HELPINGS:

What a difference a week makes.  Today was heads and tails over last Monday, for many blatantly obvious reasons, but also because it was almost 70 degrees and sunny here in southeast Michigan.  That seems to happen about….never… these days.  Where’s my precious global warming at?  It helped me rise to levels beyond my wildest dreams.  I walked to the grocery store today.  Walked.  Then I walked back- with groceries.  It was madness.  Let’s just say that I’m feeling a lot more open to little adventures lately.  Remember how I said I knew life was about to get more interesting?  Mmmmhm.  That’s all for now.  Sample on, friends.

Reese Witherspoon “Very Sorry” For Arrest (People) – I did not see this one coming.  I hardly think that shouting, “you’re about to know who I am” at a police officer arresting my husband is the way to settle a situation.  I prefer tears and promises.  Now I’m in the mood to watch Fear.

7 Things Every Exhausted Person Should Do For Herself (Oprah) – I did the first one today without even realize I was being guided by the almighty O.

America’s Favorite Sustainable Craft Breweries (Inhabitat) - Everyone likes to throw around the “s” word these days, whether it’s energy or seafood, many of us shrug and think, “that’s cool.”  Whether you’re pretending to know a lot about the sustainable lifestyle or are a diehard energy maniac, you should at least be drinking sustainable beer.  I mean, it’s the least you can do.

25 Over the Top Latte Art Designs (List25) – The first time a barista created a Christmas tree in my latte, I giggled.  Out loud.  It made me feel pretty special.  He must have thought I’ve been living under a rock for the last 7 years, at least.  That’s because I usually opt for the house coffee, because it’s $1.07 cheaper than a latte.  Just livin’ the dream.

Bow Down to Glitter Bombs, Alcoholic Bananas, and Bracketology

I’m sorry.  I can’t help it.  #DoubleFeature:

Snapshot: Beyonce for Shape Magazine April 2013 (The Fashion Bomb Blog) – My lady love is at it again.  Some call it overexposure.  I call it amazeballs.  Tomato/tomahtoe.

Beyonce | I Am : Bow Down/I Been On (iam.beyonce.com) – So when I saw the “bow down” picture posted on Bey’s Facebook and Instagram yesterday, even I thought, “K, that’s a little much.”  I got it in a marketing sense- with the whole “trailer” for her new tour and such, but what I didn’t spend enough time looking at was that it was a link to her new song ‘Bow Down’, which I think I may be in love with, but when it switches to ‘I Been On’, it gets a little weird.  Listen here!

MONDAY HELPINGS:

I woke up with uuber anxiety today, for no particular reason.  I actually had stress dreams about not turning in a high school assignment, one about not having the appropriate gluten free items in my lunch box, and something else rather laughable that I can’t remember now.  I think I have to take my own advice and really get into that meditation tonight!  So without further adieu..

Caffeine: How Much is too Much? (Detroit Free Press) - I wondered this myself today when I went for my 2nd coffee, usually an optional treat, today was a must.

Lindsay Lohan Gets Glitter Bombed Arriving Late to Court (laist.com) – That is probably the most magical thing that has happened to her in years.

8 Things You Can Turn Into Alcohol (Huffington Post) – What?  You’re not ready to think about alcohol again yet?  Don’t be silly.  While you may not have a Monkey Puzzle Tree in your backyard, you can probably find yourself some parsnips or bananas and get to work.

This shhhh is….

March Madness 2013 Predictions (inthecapital.com) - I am less worried about my bracket picks, and more concerned about the fabulous names my brackets will have.  In my group, that is a win- best bracket name.  It may be the only win I have a shot at.

7 Foods to Fight Stress (mindbodygreen.com) - Dark chocolate is number one.  No mistake there.  I know what I’ll be filling my lunch box (both real and dreamed) with tomorrow!

A Leprechaun Sighting, Chocolate Guinness Cake, and the Best/Worst Hangover Foods

First, a St. Patrick’s Day tradition for you, my friends.

Leprechaun Sighting in Mobile, Alabama (Youtube) – For as long as I have this blog, I will post this video, every year.  And to think, I almost had to move to Alabama.  I also highly recommend the remix of this incredible news story.

SATURDAY HELPINGS:

Instead of being out, getting involved in Irish shenanigans, I’ll be prepping you for St. Patrick’s day from my couch, nursing a fresh hangover.  I had a great night out with a friend from home, which was the beginning and the end of my crazy weekend.  Tonight, it’s St. Patty’s themed samples, tomorrow, we’ll pick up the pieces together and get our lives back on track.  Sound like a plan?

Chocolate Stout Cake (Smitten Kitchen) - Guinness does not excite me in any way, but I can envision it being a tasty addition to a chocolate cake.  Let me know how it goes!

8 Irish Whiskies That Aren’t Jameson (The Daily Meal) – It makes me shudder to even say the “w” word after last night.  Proceed with caution.

Irish Cream Cheesecake Brownies (Sweet Peas Kitchen) - This is more my speed.  I think about Irish cream in my coffee most days of the week.  But don’t worry, I chicken out.

The Most Authentic Irish Pubs in America (The Daily Meal) – I don’t happen to live near any of these gems, but would love your take if you’ve been… or pubs that should have made the list, but didn’t.  Send them over!

The Best and Worst Foods to Cure a Hangover (Greatist) - You will need this in the morning.  Trust me, and you’re welcome.

Don’t Mess With Kelly Clarkson, Put on Your Printed Pumps, and Get Your Harlem Shake On

I’ve always been a fan of Kelly Clarkson.  The girl has serious talent, and is among the 3-4 American Idol contestants that really had the “it” factor, and well-deserved success.  Does anyone even watch that garbage show anymore?  It should have ended last season, at the latest.  Anyways- apparently Clive Davis has come out with an memoir where he admits to bisexual relations, among other things, including a bashing of Kelly Clarkson as an artist.  Kelly has already come back swinging, and I think it’s pretty awesome and ballsy.

Don’t Mess With Texas: Kelly’s Words for Clive (Marquee Blog) – Yeah!  So take that!

TUESDAY HELPINGS:

Well, it happened.  I cut my hair.  I cut maybe 2 inches off.  It probably looks the same.  It feels a hell of a lot lighter, and so do I.  Maybe it’s the haircut, or the color, or the coffee and sushi with some of my best friends, but this is the stuff that Tuesdays should be made of, in my opinion.  Always.  I hope you’re enjoying your Tuesday just as much.  Here’s the goods:

We Ate Lays 3 New Flavors and Lived to Tell About It (Buffalo Eats) – Aren’t you curious about the new flavors?  Take the guessing out of it and read this post.  PS, dinner isn’t for an hour and I’m starving.  There will be more food samples to follow.

Shop Printed Pumps (Who What Wear) - I cannot carry a print.  It’s too much for all 5’9 of me.  I do prefer a splash here and there, a purse, shoes, a scarf.  So I liked the idea of this article.  I do not support, however, the full outfit of prints that match or are clashing.  I’m sorry, that never looks good, even if Fashion Week tells you it does!

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Mediocre People (James Altucher) – Mediocrity is underrated.  Aren’t we all shooting for some kind of upper-mediocre existence?  Does that sound depressing?  If so, read on.  James Altucher is an author and all around honest/funny guy.  Make sure you get to the Tupac story.  It’s a good one.

Baked Blueberry Coconut Oatmeal (Two Peas & Their Pod) - I am always looking for more interesting breakfasts, since you HAVE to eat breakfast now or forego your right to complain about how you’re unhealthy or not losing weight.  Oatmeal is still on the fine line for me when I’m being a good gluten-free girl, but deep down, I love it mixed up with some tasty ingredients.  This one sounds like a winner.

Meet Baauer, the Man Behind the Harlem Shake (The Daily Beast) - All I’ve seen anywhere is this Harlem Shake business, and I have to admit something: I have not watched one HS video.  I hate internet videos, and hate them even more when someone tries to suggest I watch one.  I was interested in finding out where this latest craze came from, and am ready to take bets on how long this one will stick around for (I’ll guess 8 weeks.)

My Mom is Famous, Italy is Calling, and Josh Groban Wants You on Sex Pills

And now, the debut of my famous Mom!  She doesn’t prefer that I shout it from the rooftops, but I am pretty excited that she was featured in this month’s Buffalo Spree magazine: The Cocktail Issue.  In a feature by Nina Barone, my Mom discusses why a perfectly made dirty martini is her drink of choice.  Extra olives, please!

I Drink, Therefore I Am (Buffalo Spree) - Oh yeah, there are other people in this article, too.

SUNDAY HELPINGS:

It’s been a better-than-normal Sunday.  I had coffee, watched some sports, hung out with the hubs and my family in the same square footage, saw the new homes of some of my favorite people, ate too much, watched lots of Beyonce, and don’t have to go anywhere tomorrow morning.  It’s a good feeling, well, except for the overeating part.  Details!  I plan to spend the next few days in my beloved Western New York, but I’ll try really hard not to spend the entire week waxing poetic.  How, how, how do I capture this feeling I have in my other home, in Michigan?  I’m obsessed with figuring it out.  My other new obsession will be all things Italian culture.  In 5 months, I will be adventuring through southern Italy and I’ve got a lot of work to do before that time.  PS- Unrelated: I just heard there are 3 weeks until daylight savings time.  There is light ahead!  Wooo!

Italy From the Inside - A fun place to start.  This blog features a super cute family living in Washington state, hailing from Trieste, Italy that genuinely love using social media to bring you insider tips about traveling in Italy, cooking Italian, and speaking the language.  Their kids even have a podcast for other kids learning about the country.  Love!

Josh Groban’s Sex Pills Make You WAY Better at Sex (Huffington Post) – I am posting this just because it’s funny.  I have a greater appreciation for Josh Groban after seeing him on Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show, Great Job.

Maker’s Mark Won’t Water Down Whiskey, After All (CNN) – You better watch it Maker’s.  Watch yourself now.  What the world needs now isn’t watered down whiskey!  It’s love, sweet love.  Duh.

Skinny Lemon Glazed Chicken (Skinny Kitchen) – After a weekend (okay, week +) of sweets, cakes, and more sweets, it’s time to get back on track.  I will be looking for easy, healthy recipes to cook for my Buffalo family this week in an effort to get us all headed in the right direction.  This one is incredibly simple.

The 10 Things You’ll Do Once You Start Yoga (Recovering Yogi) - I clicked on this one thinking it would be an inspirational beginning to my fresh start yoga practice tomorrow.  Turns out, it’s a funny, but likely true, list of experiences you may have once you get yoga-obsessed.  I ran into a guy this weekend who has lost 12 lbs. just by doing yoga, in like a month.  Hence, my favorite on this list is #3.

The Ann Arbor Sampler – The Wafel Shop

I felt pretty stoked when I saw a new waffle shop was opening in downtown Ann Arbor. I’m not really sure why, because waffles are not something I think about frequently. Maybe it’s because I once saw a waffle stand on an episode of Portlandia, and questioned why Ann Arbor didn’t also have one. The Wafel Shop opened at 113 E. Liberty the first week of February in the space formerly held by Cafe Japon.

I wandered into Wafel on a whim shortly after they opened at 10am. There were already a few customers waiting for their orders. I could immediately see the staff was working at a slow, yet very deliberate pace to fill orders. There was clearly that air of confusion that accompanies most establishments during opening week. Despite the confusion, everyone was friendly, especially the man behind the cash register. Now, when I say cash register, I actually mean swanky iPad point of service. It was my first experience “finger swiping” my name for a bill. Pretty cool.

Here’s the gist. You have 2 choices for your waffle: the sweeter Liege, featuring a dense batter with pearls of sugar inside, or the Brussels, a more savory, crispy outside, fluffy inside Belgian. You then have the task of choosing toppings, which include sweets like fruit, chocolate sauce, whipped cream, or salty bacon. Each topping is a dollar, so be prepared to spend at least $8-9 for a well-dressed waffle. A naked waffle is $5. I chose the Liege to appease my sweet tooth with bananas, blackberries (obsession of the moment), and homemade whipped cream.

I waited about 10 minutes for my order, and watched while the team of 3 worked together to execute. A couple ahead of me starting making impatient comments (so unnecessary) and were visibly angered when my order came out before theirs. Understandable, but it’s opening week, deal with it!

I drove my waffle home and was concerned about how it would withstand the drive. I was pleased that it was still warm when I arrived, and absolutely delicious. Wafel is a whimsical alternative to your full-on brunch choices, or your quickie bagel and coffee. It’s not a place I’d probably visit more than once a month, but I like the unique approach for something a little outside the ordinary. With time and familiarity, I think Wafel will run a smooth, delicious eatery and I recommend it for a fun meal!

+ Wafel is something different and something luxurious for a (potentially) quick and satisfying treat. Their ingredients were fresh, and with perks like homemade whipped cream, you can’t go wrong. Friendly staff! Bright, modern decor with a slight 1950′s feel.

- If you’re in a rush, avoid Wafel for at least a month until all the kinks are worked out. Also hoping they might offer more options for toppings in the future.

The Ann Arbor Sampler – Lab

Since moving to Ann Arbor, I’ve become somewhat of a coffee house junkie.  It could be because I used to be enveloped in the grad school way of life, looking for a comfortable nook to study or pump out a paper.  Now, as a graduated grad student, I still like to spend time in coffee shops that are local, cozy, modern, and inexpensive.  I stumbled across Lab recently while on campus, and was even more intent on visiting once I discovered they are one of the few carriers of Cecilia’s Pastries, or more specifically, Cecilia’s macarons.  It’s on my food bucket list to experience an authentic macaron, so I had to get to Lab, quickly.

Lab, located at 505 E. Liberty Street, is the epitome of modern, all white, grey, and oak.  Seating isn’t plentiful, people, so don’t plan on spending hours comfortably curled up next to a pile of books.  I was left with one open seat, at a “standing” bar in the middle of the room.  Since I’m a cheapskate, I ordered a house blend medium coffee for around $3.  The medium coffee at Lab was about a dollar more expensive than other comparable coffee places, with a few ounces less than your average “medium.”  I was disappointed to see the absence of macarons in the bakery display, and the gentleman behind the counter seemed unsure/disinterested about when they might return.  Lab also has 4 flavors of frozen yogurt with toppings including chocolate chips, coconut, fruit, and nuts.

Image

Image

Image

Lab seems to get its name from the brewing method they employ, involving the pour of hot water over coffee grounds and letting it drip into a Pyrex below.  Pulling, according to their menu board.  It was cute and clever, but I’m not a coffee snob, I don’t need the porcelain bells and whistles.  I was also bummed to find out they did not carry fake sweetener, just the traditional stuff.  I know, it’ll probably kill me, but if that’s my coffee sweetener of choice, I’d like to at least have it as an option.  I always feel judged when I rip open a packet of Splenda…

Image

+ If you are looking for a total coffee experience, have nothing but time, don’t mind potentially taking your coffee to go, and are fine with shelling out $6-8 for a bacon and cheddar scone, you will really love Lab.  They did have a fine soundtrack of foreign jazz and swing music, which I did appreciate and enjoy.

- See above.  Don’t plan on meeting a large study group of friends unless you plan to get there early and stay for a long time.
