Beyonce | I Am : Bow Down/I Been On (iam.beyonce.com) – So when I saw the “bow down” picture posted on Bey’s Facebook and Instagram yesterday, even I thought, “K, that’s a little much.” I got it in a marketing sense- with the whole “trailer” for her new tour and such, but what I didn’t spend enough time looking at was that it was a link to her new song ‘Bow Down’, which I think I may be in love with, but when it switches to ‘I Been On’, it gets a little weird. Listen here!

MONDAY HELPINGS:
I woke up with uuber anxiety today, for no particular reason. I actually had stress dreams about not turning in a high school assignment, one about not having the appropriate gluten free items in my lunch box, and something else rather laughable that I can’t remember now. I think I have to take my own advice and really get into that meditation tonight! So without further adieu..
8 Things You Can Turn Into Alcohol (Huffington Post) – What? You’re not ready to think about alcohol again yet? Don’t be silly. While you may not have a Monkey Puzzle Tree in your backyard, you can probably find yourself some parsnips or bananas and get to work.
This shhhh is….
March Madness 2013 Predictions (inthecapital.com)- I am less worried about my bracket picks, and more concerned about the fabulous names my brackets will have. In my group, that is a win- best bracket name. It may be the only win I have a shot at.
7 Foods to Fight Stress (mindbodygreen.com)- Dark chocolate is number one. No mistake there. I know what I’ll be filling my lunch box (both real and dreamed) with tomorrow!
I started with E! at 3PM EST. Unnecessary. Switched over to 3 hours of DVR Nashville and Smash. Better use of time.
I could go on and on about red carpet fashion, but I’ll leave that to fashionistas worldwide. I’ll handle any wardrobe malfunctions.
Red carpet interviews are always super awkward/creepy. Re: Ryan Seacrest forcing Joseph Gordon Levitt to meet his idol on camera, Dustin Hoffman. Dustin Hoffman face: who the F is this?
Wait, so it doesn’t start until 8:30? Poor husband.
Okay I’m back.
Oh my. The ABC Kristen Chenowith interviews are painful. “Baby” this and “baby” that.
And they’re getting right into it. No big musical number?
I don’t particularly care if Seth MacFarlane is successful. But so far I’m kind of uncomfortable. He’s nervous.
Bored. I’ve gotten into the dark chocolate.
When desperately flailing, bring in William Shatner.
Oh, maybe he’s “trying” to be bad?
I could probably go switch my laundry before “We saw your boobs” ends.
Channing Tatum and Charlize Theron? Now we’re talking (I’ve dreamt about them both, separately)
Aw they’re adorable and pretty good with the moves!
Sock puppets makes Flight more watchable for me.
That Denzel sock is pretty right on.
Both of my least favorite over-hyped young actors: Daniel and Joseph. I said I would TRY not to be mean! #justmyopinion
Haha this may be my favorite Sally Field performance ever, aside from Mrs. Doubtfire
Finally. Some damn Broadway glitz. I love this shiz. No one does it better than Billy Crystal.
Octavia looks beautiful!
SUPPORTING ACTOR: Christophe Waltz beats out Robert DeNiro, and thankfully, Phillip Seymour Hoffman. I enjoyed him in Django!
Why aren’t there million dollar new commercials for Oscar Sunday?
I <3 Paul Rudd, from Clueless onward
Am I not paying close enough attention? I don’t know what’s going on here between P Rudd and Melissa McCarthy?
Oh after Supporting Actress it will be the stretch where I have time to make lunches and switch my laundry
Whoa. Love the Brave lady’s lacy blue crazy dress. Good for her.
Did you ever think back to Reese Witherspoon in Fear and Cruel Intentions and find yourself in awe that she is an Oscar winner? Good for her, too.
Still haven’t seen Les Mis and I’m kicking myself for it. I’m a musical nerd.
Ah George. Only old guy I’m not creeped out by with that beard.
Haha.. upon seeing those 5 men walk out, me- “Who are these people?” Husband- “Avengers” The dark chocolate has again caught my eye.
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Life of Pi. I heard this was a shoo in. Another one for the list. “The movie was quite a beast to make.” Pun intended long haired guy! Weee!
Tea time (green tea, decaf, as not to interfere with this evening’s Nyquil)
WOW. Cruel use of the Jaws theme to push people off stage!
I miss when Jennifer Aniston was in with the Clooney crowd. Glory days.
The lady on the right for hair and makeup looks like someone in Ann Arbor dressed her.
Halle- gorgeous as ever. I also have a new appreciate for Bond. Thanks honey
They said pussy on ABC and I giggled.
Oh the James Bond tribute. Dame someone. She’s cute and I feel for her.
They should have had Mya Rudolph “do” her.
Oh it’s Shirley Bassey. I’m sorry that doesn’t mean something to me.
I would love a little Chris Cornell, Alicia Keys and Jack White to go along with my Bond tribute. Them + Adele = my favorite Bond songs.
(Unrelated to Oscars) I may start watching Scandal. I need something easily accessible. ABC.com baby.
The short films guy looks like the gay brother from Wedding Crashers.
Liam Neeson. I know something personal about him. Haha. You can guess, if you’d like.
Argo was my favorite of the best pictures that I saw. I hope it wins!
I didn’t see Zero Dark Thirty (yet) but I feel like I want Jessica Chastain to win. Something about her I really like.
I think Jimmy Fallon should host sometime. If they want charming and genuine and talented and funny… should I go on?
Do they not have an announcer? Seth has to do his own intro and outros? Cheap!
Laundry time.
Catherine.. don’t blow it. All That Jazz.
Aw and people want to give Beyonce a hard time for lip syncing. Phf.
Yeah JHud give it to em.
The Oscars just became the Jennifer Hudson show. But you can’t deny it. LoL poor Catherine Zeta Jones.
Okay give me some Hugh. Let’s see how these Les Mis people can hold up after that.
He’s adorable. Can’t help it. Take your shirt off.
The cast sounds good. Makes me proud! I love when people really sing.
Bad news, I still have to make lunches for tomorrow.
I think I’d like Zoe Saldana’s dress without the belt.
I love Mark Walhberg with a stuffed animal. Really shows his acting capabilities.
A TIE! GASP! Sound editing. Cutthroat!
Lots of long-haired men in sound editing.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Anne Hathaway. Bleh. I hope my opinion changes after seeing Les Mis.
Relieved to see the snack ladies coming down to feed the hungry famous people.
Back stretch time #thisisrockbottom
Adele is so classic. I hope she’s around forever.
No one has a bad word to say about her. She’s amazing!
I really do have to make those lunches now…
All right, I’m back, just in time for the dead people and the Barbara Streisand. I don’t think I will last much longer.
Love him, but why does Marvin Hamlisch get his own tribute?
Why is the 10 year mark of Chicago winning stuff a thing?
Also means 10 years since I saw Richard Gere on Letterman (2nd row!) Eek. Time flies.
I prefer Renee Zellweger in, you guessed it, Empire Records!
Arshen and Cajub = hottest names of 2013 for babies
I still love me some Norah Jones
So thrilled for Adele. She is super adorable. My total fav. And someone named Bobby Broccoli helped make that song.
Charlize is second in line to be my girlfriend, after you know who
I should be in bed. Guilt is taking over.
Tarantino: screen play. He’s such a weirdo lol.
And someone still says “peace out”. It’s comforting.
Best commercial goes to – Grey Poupon. Brilliant. I will go to GreyPoupon.com and watch your movie!
I’m tired. Spit those awards out!
DIRECTOR: Ang Lee. Spielberg cannot believe his life.
Source tells me Life of Pi wasn’t that great. Just passing that along.
Just when you were dying to see how I closed this great live sampling session… you’re about to see it right here: just short of everything we’ve been waiting for all night, I must retire. In closing:
GO: Hugh Jackman, Jessica Chastain, and Argo. We’ll see how it unfolds. Until tomorrow, I bid you adieu. Thanks for hangin’ tough with me.
UPDATE:
I’ve had some time to reflect on the show and would like to add:
-Hugh Jackman rushing to Jennifer Lawrence’s rescue? Cutest thing ever. The man is chivalry.
-Jennifer Lawrence is more likable than originally thought. And despite her fall, was it not the most graceful, beautiful fall ever? Tell me this doesn’t look like Cinderella.
-Anne Hathaway, you should have gone with the first dress. Really.
-Ben Affleck for most adorable acceptance speech.
I think that’s all. Emphasis on the Hugh and Cinderella points. Until next year!
It isn’t lower back pain or being hungover that is keeping me in Buffalo one last night, but that good old fashioned excuse of inconvenient winter weather. Today was pretty much a wasted one, yet a great opportunity for some in-depth sampling. Top news: it’s National Margarita Day! I should probably commence with the margarita imbibing, since 2 Aleves just aren’t working for me, or my lower spine.
Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon Sing “Ivory and Ivory” (Buzzfeed) – If you’ve been following one of late night’s most heated relationships, you’ll be dying to know the latest between the once “BFFs for 6 months,” now “Worst enemies for 6 months.” This is love/hate if I’ve ever seen it.
Guest Editor Blake Lively’s Fashion Picks for Spring (Who What Wear) – What I miss about Gossip Girl is the following: the first season, the breaking of new music and artists, and the fashion. It was fashion I could never afford, but observe long enough to copy in a very affordable manner. Blake guest stars on WWW and shares her favorite must-haves that you can then duplicate via Target or something.
Caramel Macchiato Cookies (Country Cleaver) – I have had such a serious sweet tooth the last 2 weeks and I could eat a batch of these in about 25 minutes. I’d need milk, obviously and probably would throw in some dark chocolate chunks into the mix, as well.
The Luke Wilson of Wine, Not Quite the Leading Grape (Food & Wine)- Love this article and I love a good Barbera! I sampled my first Barbera in Rome, in honor of a good friend of mine with the same last name. And it was delish! This post includes a list of moderately priced options to try.
Lindy Ruff Shows Class, Heart, Sense of Humor in Press Conference (Die By the Blade) – As a follow up to the shocking Buffalo sports news this week, Lindy Ruff bid WNY farewell in a press conference this morning where he once again reminded us why we loved him as head coach for so many years. Bittersweet! Thanks for everything you’ve done for our community, Lindy. You will be missed.
Something I noticed while out shopping today (B1G1 pants at NY&Co, friends!) is the over-availability of flowing, wispy shirts that aren’t just long, but wide. Who? Who may I ask looks good in garments like these? Just your typical 85 lb. preteen? I don’t get it. I like the idea of a cute, flowing blouse and skinny jeans, but if you’re 5’9 like me with a little meat on your bones and your, ahem, upper area… it’s just not going to cut it. As a show of my regret for the Rant of the Month, I’ll give kudos to Kim Kardashian for explaining why certain ladies can’t pull off this look.
I am enjoying myself too much this week. It’s probably not healthy. I guess that’s the perk of being in love with/living less than 5 hours from your home. I think I just need to see it as a perk and not a hardship. And that is today’s out loud, blogosphere therapy session. How much do I owe you all? While you tally up my bill, check out these samples, that yes, include some Buffalo-centric links.
Buffalo Eats Guide to Food Trucks (Buffalo Eats) – I love the food truck boom and how WNY now has !13! food trucks roaming the streets with a wide variety of cuisines. I am going to dedicate one trip next time just to eating at food trucks. I have been a huge fan of Lloyd Taco Truck since they debuted in 2010 (who isn’t?) but am also eager to devote more time to sampling the newbies!
Balancing Acts (Under the Oaks) – When I read this blog, it felt like I was reading my own brain. If you’ve ever felt like at one time you were functioning at an impressively high level, and now you’re kind of tossing around to-do lists for whenever you get to them, this post will be very comforting to you. It was to me.
BREAKING: Buffalo Sabres Fire Head Coach Lindy Ruff (Buffalo News Blog) – Whoa. This is huge. This just unfolded as I typed. Stay tuned, fans. I am too far out of the Sabres loop to know what people think about this. Lindy was the longest reigning NHL coach of the moment, 16 years. Certainly the end of an era. Sad!
And now, the debut of my famous Mom! She doesn’t prefer that I shout it from the rooftops, but I am pretty excited that she was featured in this month’s Buffalo Spree magazine: The Cocktail Issue. In a feature by Nina Barone, my Mom discusses why a perfectly made dirty martini is her drink of choice. Extra olives, please!
It’s been a better-than-normal Sunday. I had coffee, watched some sports, hung out with the hubs and my family in the same square footage, saw the new homes of some of my favorite people, ate too much, watched lots of Beyonce, and don’t have to go anywhere tomorrow morning. It’s a good feeling, well, except for the overeating part. Details! I plan to spend the next few days in my beloved Western New York, but I’ll try really hard not to spend the entire week waxing poetic. How, how, how do I capture this feeling I have in my other home, in Michigan? I’m obsessed with figuring it out. My other new obsession will be all things Italian culture. In 5 months, I will be adventuring through southern Italy and I’ve got a lot of work to do before that time. PS- Unrelated: I just heard there are 3 weeks until daylight savings time. There is light ahead! Wooo!
Italy From the Inside - A fun place to start. This blog features a super cute family living in Washington state, hailing from Trieste, Italy that genuinely love using social media to bring you insider tips about traveling in Italy, cooking Italian, and speaking the language. Their kids even have a podcast for other kids learning about the country. Love!
Skinny Lemon Glazed Chicken (Skinny Kitchen) – After a weekend (okay, week +) of sweets, cakes, and more sweets, it’s time to get back on track. I will be looking for easy, healthy recipes to cook for my Buffalo family this week in an effort to get us all headed in the right direction. This one is incredibly simple.
The 10 Things You’ll Do Once You Start Yoga (Recovering Yogi) - I clicked on this one thinking it would be an inspirational beginning to my fresh start yoga practice tomorrow. Turns out, it’s a funny, but likely true, list of experiences you may have once you get yoga-obsessed. I ran into a guy this weekend who has lost 12 lbs. just by doing yoga, in like a month. Hence, my favorite on this list is #3.
- I think I’m rooting for the 49ers. Less murderers on the team?
- Second sporting event where a team comes out to “The Streets Have No Name?” Am I missing the appeal?
- Always love me some Queen.
- Sandy Hook? I’m crying already
- God Bless you JHud. That’s what WW looks like when you follow it Lindsay.
-Alicia Keys- pure. Gorgeous talent.
-I will only comment on awesome commercials and I haven’t seen any yet.
- First TD to the Ravens. Statically they have a better shot of winning now.
-Why is Joe Flacco so creepy looking?
-M&Ms = first commercial to get me to chuckle
-Audi commercial was cute.
-Lol to Bar Rafaeli/Go Daddy. I was uncomfortable
-if Frank Gore scores, I’ll be annoyed. Once a fantasy dud means I’ll hate you forever.
-just had the first group “OHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” On the missed SF touchdown
-Hahaha Amy Poehler. #bestbuy
-Let’s look at the world differently. I like the message Coke
-My favorite thing is when the fattest guy gets the ball.
-Calvin Klein: something for the ladies.
-2nd Hyundai commercial much better.
-Brawl!
-Hubby wins 2nd quarter square. Probably.
-oops spoke too soon.
-IT’S BEYONCE TIME. We’ll chat afterwards.
- B! Beautiful and talented. Flawless. Energy. I would have liked some other songs, felt a little disjointed at times. Would have rather closed with more Destiny’s Child + Survivor. Would have loved some Jay. Overall, really, really good.
-remember how embarrassing Madonna was?
- WHOA longest kick return in post season. Sorry 49ers.
-Lights out?! Someone just lost their job? Hurricane?
-27 minutes without play. Bored. Phone close to dying. Someone just brought out a cake…
-momentum shift…
-Congrats to the Ravens! As long as the Patriots didn’t win, I’m fine with that outcome.
Super Bowl Sunday, 47. It seems like it should be older than that, no? When we reflect back on all the games we’ve taken in over the years (including the Bills, the Bills, the Bills, and the Bills, ’91-’94), it’s hard to imagine them not being the monstrosity of entertainment they have become. Think of these poor players, back in 1967, and how they never even realized that just a few decades later, they could have been witness to a live wardrobe malfunction.
As we kick off (pun intended) our Super Bowl Sunday, I wish you all enjoyable gatherings of friends and family, full of smack talk and nachos. I am giving life another shot today, after February deceived me and brought yet another illness to my doorstep. Over it! I’m crossing my fingers for the rest of the month. Pour yourself a drink, grab a comfy seat, and get ready for Beyonce to blow your mind. I mean, get ready for these great Super Bowl inspired samples.
Wasabi Bloody Mary (A Beautiful Mess) – If I had my choice, I’d start every day of my life with the perfectly mixed bloody mary. I like mine spicy, with olives. The ladies at A Beautiful Mess concocted this extra sassy drink with a hint of wasabi. Add a giant platter of sushi and it sounds like the perfect day to me!
Chicken Wings and Beer Pairings (Food & Wine) – I am a Buffalo girl through and through, so it takes a lot to impress me when it comes to chicken wings. Yep. In Buffalo, we call them chicken wings. Not Buffalo wings, because that would be silly and repetitive. F&W gave us this simple list of the best beers for your favorite type of wing. When in doubt, wash it down with a nice, cold Labatt Blue. There’s another Buffalo trick for ya.
Super Bowl Odds 2013 (Baltimore Beat Down) – If you’re a football beginner, or you aren’t sure what team to root for, check out this breakdown of the game odds. Hint, the Ravens are underdogs by 3.5 points, which means, despite sharing the AFC, I will probably feel obligated to cheer them on. I have an underdog heart!
Stars at the Super Bowl (Huffington Post) – They can’t help themselves. If there is a party, you will see many of these celebs looking for a red carpet. We also learn that there are fashion options other than a jersey and sweat pants for this special day.
Puppy Bowl 2013 Lineup (Thought Catalog) – It would be unfair not to include what is the highlight of this Sunday for many Americans, The 2013 Puppy Bowl. This link includes the entire starting line-up, some of the fiercest canine athletes in the world. And they are all adoptable! I had to step away from the computer. It’s too tempting.
The finale of one of my favorite shows is happening…. now. I am on DVR standby until my husband returns from ordering us a rice cooker. That’s big excitement around here. I’m pretty bummed to say goodbye to 30 Rock. That means I have about 2 shows that I sort of care about now. What show is an absolutely must-adopt? I’m a TV junkie, but it’s got to be the good stuff. Well written, likable characters, witty. Or, a reality show.
What Not to do When You’re Stressed (HuffingtonPost) – It seems in my world, I get one good day and a succession of stressful ones, so I thought this might be a good list. I’m not totally sure I agree with all of this, because I almost ALWAYS feel better after chatting with one of my best friends, or having a giant margarita.
Item of the Day: Brussels Sprouts (Hello Giggles) - In an effort to balance out some of the fatty discretions I’ve shared with you lately, welcome to my October/November/December 2012 obsession. Much like the author of this article, I never hated brussels sprouts growing up because my mom hated them for the both of us. Which means, as a ripe old adult, I tried them for the first time and wanted nothing else. I like to roast mine until they are so crunchy, I pretend they are french fries.
How and Why Flowers Make You Happy (InBloom.info) – Winter seems like the appropriate time to really hunker down and take care of yourself, and some voice out of the deep blue yonder said to me recently, “buy yourself some flowers!” Yes, I felt guilty spending the $8.99 for this peppy little pot, but then I saw how sad it was to not spend $8.99. Everyone needs a little bright, living goodness in their homes. It’s science. I feel better already.
I guess I have to bring it up, although I have nothing but love for m’lady. Why B felt she had to sing along with a pre-recorded back track at the Inauguration, I’m not sure, but I imagine she had a good reason. This is not an artist whose talent we question, and I can vouch for that, personally. Did I mention I met her in Toronto, before she put on an amazing free concert in the middle of town? It was a day to remember. Maybe she had a cold. Maybe it was because it was 2 degrees out. Either way, I forgive. This isn’t Ashlee Simpson, people! Watch it again. It seems to me that she is singing along with the track- I can hear her voice over it, and it sounds fine to me.
Somewhere inside of me, I found a burst of energy today and have been going nonstop since the end of work. I decided to liven up the healthy eating by making 2-3 new recipes per week from some of my favorite WW friendly blogs. I posted one yesterday, and I’ll share the second one now. Emily Bites’ Skinny Spinach Artichoke Chicken was divine and so creamy. It tasted like cheating (but wasn’t!)
My dinner for tomorrow is still simmering in the Crock Pot. It looks promising and was so easy to put together. Here ya go.
How to Remember You’re Actually Okay (HelloGiggles) – I stumbled across this today, and it seemed fitting, especially with the emotional tailspin I had last night. Could you tell? This is a grounding reminder that everyone goes a little whack sometimes, and no matter how it feels- you’re okay, it will be fine, etc., etc. I swear I was surprised when I saw Becca Rose actually asks herself “WWBD” in these situations. I promise I have other hobbies other than Beyonce (sometimes). Stick with me.
The best thing happened last night after I flipped from the marathoning Kourtney and Kim. No, not that the Patriots missed the Super Bowl by more than one touchdown… that was a close second. Who wants to see those cheaters in another SB matchup?
Anyways, I caught the second half of a childhood classic, The Lion King on ABC Family. It is rare to be able to see one of those “glory day” Disney films in its entirety on cable, and if you’re like me, although you own all the good ones, they’re all on VHS and now rendered useless. I happened to tune in at the exact right moment (funny how life does that), where Simba sees his father in the big cloud formation in the sky, and he reminds Simba of what he’d lost sight of.
Those words resonated with me. Remember who you are. That’s something I’ve struggled with since moving away. I identify so much with my family, my friends, my sports teams, my hometown history that it sometimes feels like I’m a different person in Michigan. On top of that, add a new last name and then it gets really confusing! So who am I? I am a girly girl (you wouldn’t know it from how I dress everyday at work). I like to get prettied up. I like a big glass of red at a bar that is way overpriced but chock full of ambience. I like a girls night out with other like-minded girls who like to cut a rug. I like writing. I like theater, specifically musical theater. Music is ignites my soul. I’m a foodie at heart with a weight obsessive brain. I like to laugh and I like to make people laugh. I like to go out and run into people I know. I like kids (when I am not forced to flush their toilet or shove them into a weighted vest they’d rather chuck at me). I like to create. These are all things that are easily forgotten in the day-to-day shuffle. It was a good reminder to stop and remember who I am, and invest in that. Who are you?
In the spirit of getting back to what makes me tick, here are a few topics close to my heart.
SHEI Magazine – I was going to save this for another post regarding fashion in your late 20′s, but one of my nitpicks about Ann Arbor is what I consider an overly casual adult population. If you’re not a student wandering around in a mini dress, you’re a middle-aged person (or at least, you look like you are) schlepping it up in shrunken khakis, maybe a vest of some sort, Birkenstocks (or some orthopedic footwear/hiking/running gear), a backpack, and your hair is at least salt and pepper, if not totally grey. Am I over generalizing? Perhaps. But I’d say at least 5 in 10 non-students on the street fall into my overgeneralization. As I’ve gotten comfortable here, so has any sense of fashion I ever had, and though I am trying to keep the greys at bay, I am guilty of not giving a crap and end result, feeling like crap. I was surprised to find this fashion magazine based in Ann Arbor, geared towards the college crowd, yes, but intriguing none the less. It also features current events and locations in the A2, so I imagine I’ll be referring to it again in the future.
How to Choose the Best Yoga Mat For You - It’s all about getting reconnected, mind and body, and I know yoga is just one of the paths to take. I am one who likes a tad more padding for the good old bum knee. I found this article helpful.
Skinny Spinach and Artichoke Chicken – I love this recipe because it is super easy, sounds super delicious, and is skinnied! Anything you can put together in one casserole dish is a weeknight dream. When it comes out of the oven, I fully expect to feel like the culinary goddess I imagine I can be.
The Dirty Martini – I should have mentioned, next to wine, a nicely made dirty martini is one of my “signature” beverages. I like this site because it provides you with some insight into the basics, and maybe some new mixes you haven’t tried before.
Obama Inauguration Style - In honor of the big day, I share this blog with you from PoP Goes Boston. I adore Boston (add loves to travel to my identity list), and always admire the First Lady’s style. Her casual but sophisticated and well-shaped looks are something I identify with (you won’t catch me in one of those “hip” flowing shirts that are so popular now) because I am a woman with womanly curves. I don’t think you should put a potato sack on and call it cute. Michelle Obama knows a thing or two about a perfectly fitting dress and her daughters are quickly following in her footsteps.
