The Art of ‘Manuel’ Transmission in Buffalo

Welcome to Buffalo, EJ Manuel!

EJ Manuel a Surprise at No. 16 to Buffalo Bills (NFL) – the first QB drafted in the NFL draft goes to… US!  Everyone planned on making it a Syracuse dynasty with Ryan Nassib, so I’ll honestly say, I don’t know much about this guy.  Still, the enthusiasm alone from my fellow Buffalonians is great to see.  Any change, any hope, any forward progress is an optimistic day for the Buffalo Bills.  Here’s to 2013/2014.  Probably a building year.  Again.

A Small Plate of Sad NFL Draft Picks

I am tired. Also, hellbent on being asleep before midnight, for the first time in weeks, so I’m sorry. This is all you get. I still love you, though.

The 50 Worst Draft Picks in NFL History (Bleacher Report) – It’s coming for ya. The NFL Draft. I’m not going to pretend I ever watch it. It’s tradition to just get all the bad news via text from other devastated Bills fans.

Thanks for nothing, Todd.

This Is It

The 2013 baby boom is in full swing, with the latest expectant mama, Halle Berry. Here’s a complete list, for those with competing due dates.

Look Who’s Popping (IVillage) – I still sometimes have to look up Shiloh Pitt’s birthday, to find out how old my friend’s son is.

MONDAY SMALL PLATE
I’m back, for you, my pretties. I took a short (really..2 day) hiatus to do some end of break/wedding celebrating and here I am, dedicated as ever, typing this post from an iPhone at the bar. I am at the only bar in Ann Arbor with a seat facing a TV. The Final Four ends tonight. It all comes down to this. Brackets have been shattered, dreams have been shelved or polished, and tonight, my sports fan losing streak has the potential to end. My entire Buffalonian life has been shadowed by our sports teams’ inability to seal the deal. I don’t know what it feels like to pour out onto the street and hug strangers wearing identical clothing, wave flags, and sing fight songs. Tonight may be the night. Or not. Either way, I’m a seasoned professional. If we win, I can check it off the bucket list. If we lose, I will win money from my bracket. MuHahahahaha. GO BLUE!

Why They’ll Win – Michigan vs Louisville (NCAA) - Great news. Wolverines are underdogs. That’s all I know.

Happy Hour – Good For a Laugh

It’s good to see this guy up and at ‘em. We could all use a laugh after accidentally viewing that injury photo by some jackass on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram. We all know one. And with that, I introduce you to the weekend.

Kevin Ware Hosts Late Show Top 10 List (NPR) – Of course don’t take this as me showing support for Louisville. They are about the only team I don’t want to see take the title.

Slow News Day Small Plates of Love, Purses, and a Countdown to the Final Four

Happy Anniversary to some of my favorite couples today, including:

Beyonce, Jay-Z Turn Heads in Havana, Cuba (Wonderwall) - It’s no mistake that 4/4 is good luck.  Happy anniversary to all the lovas out there.

THURSDAY SMALL PLATES:

Maybe it’s just because I’m on “vacation,” but it seems like a slow news week out there.  I mean, besides obvious things that we don’t need to be worrying about on this blog, there seems to be a shortage of fluffy gossip news.  Small plates tonight, and I’ll try to leave you with more substantial samples for the weekend.

Final Four 2013 Strengths and Weaknesses of Each Semi-Finalist (Bleacher Report) – It’s the calm before the storm, and we are beyond psyched in my two home states for Michigan and Syracuse to duke (haha, pun intended) it out on Saturday night.  Here is the fact rollout for them, plus those other teams.

Accessories and Handbag Trends for Spring 2013 (MSN Living) – We have a bright future in our midst, if the current blast of hues are any indication.  I will have to do my best to warm up to orange.

Fendi for you, Target for me.

Moaning and Pissing About Weight Loss With a Sprinkle of Hockey and TV on Top

It’s official.

Jay Leno to Exit ‘Tonight Show’, Jimmy Fallon Will Host (ABC News) – That is, until Jay gets sick of the arrangement and tries to weasel his way back in.  Again.  Emphasis on weasel.

WEDNESDAY HELPINGS:

I was minding my own business shopping when the hard realities of April in the Northeast/Midwest hit like a train.  All the summer clothes are out, you need to wear them for various occasions, and they do not look good you.  It was at exactly this time last year when I saw pictures of myself and realized I was in deep trouble for my own wedding if I didn’t do something, quickly.  April is shrouded in hope and potential, but is actually a big, fat bitch.  We need to do what we do best (we being procrastinators worldwide,) and that’s get crazy obsessed with all the things that matter: working out, saying no, and hardly eating anything.  That’s what worked for me.

3 Day Emergency Diet (Delish) – I don’t care if you think this is wrong or unhealthy.  I just had an ice cream sundae from Antoinette’s.  Now do you understand?

NHL Trade Deadline 2013: Recaps and Grades for Every Team (Bleacher Report) – It was hard to ignore everyone getting worked up over what the Sabres did and did not do.  I won’t pretend to know what’s going on.

Infused Water Recipes (Inspired Fitness) – I got excited when I saw someone had posted some jugs full of infused water goodness on my Facebook feed.  This lady suggests a gallon of water a day, and even though it seems like a pain, it really does a lot of flushing.  Jazz up your water intake with these ideas.  I like to get a little crazy with sparkling water, when I really need a break.

Breakfast. Lunch. Dinner. Repeat.

Khloe Kardashian’s 25 lb. Weight Loss (Hollywood Life) - I just needed a little Kardashian dirt today.  I love the headline on the magazine, “I’M THE HOT SISTER NOW.”  Hahaha.  Khloe has always been my fav.

It’s April Fools, Ya Dyngus! Celebrate with 50 Years of General Hospital, Baseball, and Cocktails!

What’s up my April Fools?  I fell for a good one here in Buffalo.  Embarrassing!  Were you as gullible as I?

Great April Fools Pranks From Around the Web (NYTimes) – These are fine, but when you tempt me with a celebrity appearance, I’m going to forget all reason and charge on, full speed ahead.

MONDAY HELPINGS:

This post is going to be full of things I don’t particularly care about, but maybe you will?  I’m such a good friend!  That includes-  Happy Dyngus Day.  #notpolishandproud.

Image

Dyngus Day at the Central Terminal, Buffalo, NY

‘Game of Thrones’ Premier Recap (Entertainment Weekly) – This one is dedicated to my husband, who was very excited for last night.  Hope he got a chance to watch it, because I’ve been known to spoil TV shows at inappropriate times.

MLB Opening Day: Full Coverage (USA Today) - Baseball is the one major sport I haven’t really been able to get into and that’s for a really good reason: it’s boring as hell.  Still, if this is what floats your boat, stay up to date on all the first day games, etc., etc.  Blah.

A Cocktail Recipe for Deception (The Daily Meal) – Drinks that look like one thing, but taste like something else.  I would NOT find this amusing, upon expecting my dirty martini to taste a certain way and then having it not.  Would not be amused at all.

General Hospital Celebrates 50 Years on TV (NPR) – This is very near, and very dear to my heart.  I’ve been picked on mercilessly over the years for participating in a silly soap opera, but the fact is, something doesn’t stay on the air for 50 years if it’s not kind of good, at least sometimes.  50 years ago today, the first episode aired, and here I am 50 years later, curled up on the couch with my mom (just like when we started watching), enjoying this week’s celebration shows.  Cheers, GH and thanks for the memories!

Congratulations, second family!

Easter Bunnies That Will Haunt Your Dreams, Elite 8 Excitement, and Easter Food Galore

This is one of the best things to happen to me recently, and I think you’ll agree.

40 Easter Bunnies More Terrifying Than a Man Coming Back From the Dead (Democratic Underground) – We literally needed a box of tissues to dry our faces off, from all the tears of hilariousness that fell from our eyes.  Please, do yourself a favor and read the captions, too.  If it’s the only thing you do today, click on this link.

Image

It’s hard to believe, but this isn’t even the best one!

SATURDAY HELPINGS:

Wow.  What an exciting finish for the Wolverines last night.  Now a part of the Elite 8… I’ll get you caught up below.  Also, you’re probably preparing for an Easter family gathering tomorrow if you’re into that stuff.  I’ll hit you with some helpful Easter samples to keep you going.  If you happen to be dicking around on Facebook this weekend, send some LIKE right HERE.  You donate to my Easter basket, I’ll donate to yours.  Somehow.

Complete Predictions and Results from NCAA Elite 8 (Bleacher Report) – There’s probably about 25 people that even care about this anymore, if their brackets are still in it to win it.  And the entire state of Michigan.  And Ohio.  And Western and Central New York.

Image

Boo ya!

How to Make the Ultimate Ham on your Grill (Huffington Post) – Holiday dinner ham doesn’t get me that excited anymore, but getting it all glazy and crispy on a grill does peak my interest for it again.  Grab a 2 liter jug of Giacobazzi and you’ve got Easter dinner.

Almond Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies (The Wannabe Chef) – Whether you’re gluten free, pretending to be gluten free, or just want to feel a little less disgusting after cramming your face with Easter candy, give this cookie recipe a shot.

Top 10 Easter Brunches Across the US (Cooking Channel Blog) - Can you tell I haven’t had lunch yet?  It’s like grocery shopping on an empty stomach, without a list, with someone else’s credit card.

Avocado Egg Salad (Two Peas & Their Pod) – This looks a little on the unappetizingly green side, but bear with me, I know it tastes amazing.  I am one of those weirdos who loves hard boiled eggs, and egg salad, and anything else interesting you can mix in there.  Just close your eyes, and take a bite.

Harley Pasternak’s Advice For Those Working Out, but Not Losing Weight (People) - When you’re done with the above, you’ll probably need this.

Small Plates of Will Smith’s Bad Decisions, Top Airport Dining Spots, and a Cinderella Story

Who/where/how/why is Florida Gulf Coast University, you might ask? Here’s what you need to know about this year’s March Madness Cinderella story.

A Detailed Guide to Florida Gulf Coast, The Best School on Earth (SBNation) – Annnnd I’ve got my underdog back.

MONDAY SMALL PLATES:

It’ll be a quickie today, not because I’m so busy, but because I’m so un-busy with a nasty little headache. Hope everyone’s Monday was tolerable.

Will Smith Turned Down “Django Unchained” (CNN) - What an idiot. Everyone loves Will Smith, including myself, (duh, Independence Day) but this makes him sound like a real d-bag. Can anyone really imagine him handling that heavy, no constant punch line material, anyways? No.

Image

Andrew Zimmern’s Top Airport Dining Spots (Eatocracy) – I have a soft spot for a wine bar I can’t remember the name of at Dulles, and a sushi place right here in Detroit at DTW, but this is a good list to have in your carry-on. Did I mention 3.5 months until I leave for summer in Italy?

Pussy Willow Princes, Beers For Spring Patio Drinking, and Going the Eff to Sleep

My poor brackets.  Here is your March Madness/road to Sweet 16 update.  Perhaps we should call it, March sadness?

Updated Brackets, March Madness (CBS Sports) – Happy, happy that Michigan and Syracuse are still in it.  I had no ties to Gonzaga except for my awesome bracket name, but I can’t help mourning their loss.  I love underdogs.

SUNDAY HELPINGS:

This week has fun potential.  Many people are celebrating Passover, pre-Easter festivities, and if you’re in Buffalo, pre-Dyngus Day preparations.  I’ve never been a part of that whole business since I’m one of the 10 people from Buffalo who aren’t Polish, but I’m happy to be making a triumphant return home that very day.  It’s old news now, but let’s take a moment to reflect on what could have been this year, had the Silver Fox made his full apology to the region a priority.  I still love you, Anderson.

Dyngus Day Organizers Wanted to name Anderson Cooper PWP (Business First) – He would have made a great Pussy Willow Prince.  Maybe that was the title that scared him away.  Way to go.

Yeah. This is why he's not coming.

Yeah. This is why he’s not coming.

The Communal Table: Rules, Tips, Etiquette (Bon Appetit) – The communal table at restaurants is a thing now.  You need to beware of it.  After my brush with a communal table, I felt the need to get educated about the do’s and don’ts of being forced to sit with a bunch of strangers, eavesdropping on your personal conversation.  Read up, here.

7 Beers for Spring (Snooth) – Are we not ready for some new, refreshing alcohol in our lives?  I’ve recently been gifting white wines to everyone, pretending that will force the weather to change, but so far, no luck.  Let us all hold hands, and read this article about the brews we’ll be (shortly?) grasping on a patio somewhere.  Of course, we’ll have a light jacket on, but who cares.  Just get here, Spring!

Less Sleep Means Gaining More Weight (The Daily Meal) – By now, we all know that sleep connects to many other parts of our lives, but I just needed to post this as a reminder to myself, and any sleep haters out there (freaks!) that sleeping/napping/dozing IS an important part of life, and totally acceptable in society.  Those aforementioned non-believers clearly never skipped a college lecture for the best nap of their lives.  Now, in the words of Samuel L. Jackson, “GO the F*** to SLEEP!”

Sweet dreams, kids!
