Musically Inspired Monday with Jay Z, a Big/Fat Coffee, and the Cutest Things That Ever Happened

Just to get you caught up in the entertainment world:

While You Were Working (The Marquee Blog) – Plus Seth Meyers is taking over for Jimmy Fallon when he leaves Late Night.  Also, Barbara Walters is going to retire after next year, like I already warned you about.  It’s about time, in my opinion.

MONDAY HELPINGS: Hello, loves.  Welp, we survived Monday.  I’m surviving even better with a glass of red and a penchant for finding new music.  There was a time in my life where I made a new “mix” every month; a collaboration of mostly new music with some less-heard classics folded in.  I usually named them by month and year, and even now, I still listen and am immediately transported to whatever I was doing in life at that moment.  And interestingly enough, I seemed to be attracted to the exact right tunes that fit my life perfectly at that moment, even if I didn’t know an artist or song when I decided to take the chance and download it.  The last 2-3 years, I’ve hardly refreshed my music collection, and I think a large part of my disconnect from things has been my inability to find new songs I love.  I like upbeat stuff.  I’m not going through a breakup or the regular types of heartbreak, so I’m not really interested in soulful melodies or folksy longing.  I still can’t do country, and have a hard time connecting with rap these days.  That being said, I feel like I may be turning a leaf into some new inspiration.  It might really happen for me tonight.  I’m so damn philosophical with a glass of wine in hand.

‘The Great Gatsby’ Soundtrack: A Track-by-Track Review (Moviefone) – It’s quite typical, I know, that I might jump on something like this.  You’ve got your epic movie, you’ve got Baz Luhrmann and all his Aussie inspirado, you’ve got Jay Z and Beyonce… that’s pretty much an “L.Hyatt approved combination” if I’ve ever heard one.  So I sampled it.  And shit, I like it.  I’m sorry.  You’ve also got a little Lana Del Ray, Will.I.Am, and a party anthem by Fergie.  It’s the perfect pre-summer compilation.

Image

Will you just go listen, already?

Broadcast Ax: Cancelled Shows 2013 (InsideTV/EW) – Soooo many shows got hurt so badly.  Ouchies.  It will be a relief to not have 4 episodes of Smash on my DVR anymore, I’m not going to lie.  Such promise, really lost its way.  I actually feel like there’s more casualties than this list illustrates.  I’ll get back to you, but in the meantime, see if your show survived.

How I Learned a Language in 90 Days (Lifehacker) - This time a month from now, I’ll be days from leaving for Italy, and I can’t yet order my ideal pasta dish.  I’m in real trouble on this one, folks.  Ciao.

11 Diseases Coffee Can Prevent (The Daily Meal) – Don’t let any self-righteous person try and take your coffee.  They will die early.  They are in the wrong.

The 50 Cutest Things That Ever Happened (Buzzfeed) – Because it’s Monday.

Spread the love. Tomorrow is Tuesday.

2-4-1 Monday with Man Band News, an Ode to Wontons, and Hilarious Celebrity Commercials

I just discovered 98 Degrees has a new song, called ‘Girls Night Out’ which one Twitter user described as, “creepy”. So of course I had to listen. In the hunt, I found another great article about one of their other new singles that I thought you’d appreciate as well. It’s a 2-4-1 Monday.

98 Degrees Released a New Song About Their Penises (The Daily Beast) – Teehehe.

‘Girls Night Out’ Premieres off of Upcoming 98 Degrees Album (Huffington Post) – The reason this is noteworthy is because of all the boy bands, 98 degrees was 50-75% hot (sorry Justin Jeffre), while the other boy bands had maybe 2 hot guys at the most. Now, they’re all around 40 and have become creepy dance-club ogler-men.

MONDAY HELPINGS: Besides 98 Degrees burnin’ it up on the charts (I’m kidding, relax,) the other big story today is the courageous stand Jason Collins took by being the first active NBA player to come out. I actually wish this didn’t have to be a lead story at all, but as long as it is, I am proud of the message he’s sending and hope it will help other people feel comfortable enough to do the same. #EqualityForAll. Other than that, I’m obsessed with wonton wrappers. That is all.

5 Ways to Use Wonton Wrappers (Can You Stay For Dinner?) – I’ve seen them, I’ve heard about them, and this weekend, I finally made the purchase. I am glad I did. The wonton wrapper makes me feel as if I can shortcut my way to a tasty appetizer, boil my way to fake homemade raviolis, and portion control my snacking desires. Because this is a 2-4-1 Monday, I have to share at least 2 great sites!

Main Course Muffin/Cupcakes (Emily Bites) - When I began my wonton wrapper recipe search, I started here. Emily Bites knows her way around a wonton wrapper, and uses them for “cups” “cupcakes” and even for a good old fashioned egg roll, all with Weight Watchers Points Plus values. I predict you’ll spend at least 27 minutes on this website.

Budweiser ‘Buddy Cup’ Connects Beer Drinkers on Facebook (PCMag) – I can think of so many, many reasons that this is a bad idea. One clink of your wired glass, and that creepster that bought you a drink has access to every facet of your online life. But makes for good for stories, right?! Right?!

10 Best Commercials With Celebrities Part I (Hello Giggles) – This is the perfect end to my evening, and I hope yours, too. Just click on it and see Nicholas Cage’s face and you’ll know all is right with the world. Big plus: some are the best kind of celebrity commercials… commercials from Japan.

Laughing at Hipsters, Vegan Burgers That Taste Good, and a History of the Internet, by Angelina Jolie

It’s a fine day to be alive.

Jimmy Kimmel at Coachella – Messing with Hipsters (Youtube) – Hahaha.  This is a good one.  I can’t wait to buy The Chelsea Clintons’ next album.

‘Native American’ Hipster

SATURDAY HELPINGS:

There are few things that feel more luxurious and wonderful than a perfect Saturday with sunshine, warmth, and an open schedule.  I am sitting on my little deck with coffee, some berries (blackberries, of course!) and birds chirping happily.  DAMN.  I’m so HAPPY.  Until tomorrow, when it rains again.  Haha.  Any meteorologists out there want to explain to me why southeastern Michigan can’t keep a chain of high pressure going for more than a day?  Anyone?  In the meantime, enjoy your glorious weekend.

Homemade Bagel Recipe (Food & Wine) – The ultimate breakfast food, even for a non-breakfast person, is the bagel.  It’s perfect for grab and go, but in this rendition, it’s a weekend comfort food.  I won’t act like I’m ever going to go ahead and make this, but I will heat up a bagel from the grocery style in the microwave and pretend.  There is nothing I like more than hot bread.

The History of the Internet, by Angelina Jolie (Hello Giggles) - All you ever needed to know, in a few minutes of Youtube, courtesy of the savior of the world, AJ.  Can you tell I’m still #TeamAniston?  It is strange to think about how the Internet has evolved over the years, from eagerly awaiting your next “America Online: 50 free minutes” CD to identifying, trying, and sentencing a terrorist via Twitter, all in 3 hours.

Vegan Feast: Black Bean and Bulgur Burgers with Brussels Slaw and Hearts of Palm/Avocado Chop Chop Salad (Now Entering Flavor Country) – I was just as surprised as you might be to find this past week was “Veg Week” in Ann Arbor.  Wait, every week isn’t “Veg Week” in Ann Arbor?  Weird, right?  I had the pleasure of dining out with @EVitkin last night (by dining, I mean mostly doing shots), and had to share some of her culinary adventures.  I am pretty hungry now- and two thumbs up for the live action burger-construction sequence.  Love it.

How to Get What You Want Without Being a Bitch (StumbleUpon) – Or be a bitch.  That will probably get it done for you, too.

Coachella Review, Beer for Happiness, Boat Shoes for Style, and Forever Love to Boston

For everyone who wasn’t there (aka, everyone that’s not a celebrity, socialite, or a Californian):

Coachella 2013 : 10 Best Performances From Weekend 1 (Billboard) – From all accounts, it sounds mostly underwhelming.  Except for R. Kelly.  He’s always good.

MONDAY HELPINGS:

I was so looking forward to a fun and lighthearted return to sampling, but obviously, it feels a little strange blogging about trivial nonsense under today’s circumstances.  It’s getting to be all too familiar, leaving work and hearing of the latest tragedy to strike, spending the evening being bombarded with endless coverage of no answers, and wondering how we’ll move on.  When will it end?  Like everyone else, I send my thoughts and prayers to one of America’s greatest cities, and only hope that love, peace, and common decency prevails over all.  Instead of feeling helpless, tonight, I carry on with my silly fluff.  I hope it at least distracts you from the sadness and devastation.  Much love to Boston.

Image

Just the Taste of Beer is Enough to Make You Happy (The Daily Meal) - I probably didn’t need an article to prove this.  Crack open a cold one, and hug all your dear ones, puppies, iPads, whatever you love tonight.

Hair Mistakes That Make You Look Older (Oprah) – I once made the boo-boo of asking for a blunt, long bob cut a la Selena Gomez.  Then I realized, I’m not Selena Gomez, and I’m also not 17 or however old she is.  My hairstylist agreed, and I was spared.  Here are some other tips, too.

The Best and Worst Picnic Foods (Food & Wine) – It’s that time of year again.  You’re desperate to be outside.  You lack outdoor judgement skills.  You pack dairy and mayonnaise based items.  You should be ashamed of yourself.  Read this first, and think twice about shorts.  It’s only 52 degrees out there!

Spring Shoe of the Season : Boat Shoes for Women (Ivy Style) – Dad, rejoice.  Finally, after many years, your favorite shoe is IN for 2013.  Except, it’s for the ladies.  As I was out walking the city of Pittsburgh this weekend, spring had sprung, and as I hobbled around in last year’s boring ballerina flat, the in crowd showed off their shiny new boat shoes.  Boat shoes (or deck shoes, as I’ve always called them) are in all kinds of colors, textures, and patterns for spring, and I have to admit, they were cuter than I thought they’d be, and looked mighty comfy.  Now, my Dad will have the last laugh.  Enjoy!

You win, Jack. This time.

Get Mad About Terrible Liquor Flavors, Being Stood Up by a Boy Band Member, and Whacky Amanda Bynes

Aw, poor Jon.  I wonder how long he’s going to make it…

Jonathan Knight Exits New Kids on the Block Show Mid-Concert (CNN) - My favorite part of this scenario was when he stood at the back of the stage and started texting.  Bad ass.  As a showman, there is a reason Jordan was always the best one.  That’s all I’ll say.

Image

This picture says it all. No one should put Jonny in the corner.

WEDNESDAY HELPINGS:

Isn’t coming back from vacation a bitch?  I tend to think it is, so I decided to take another vacation to recover from my prior vacation.  It’s just a prior commitment in the rust belt, but I’m still grateful for any escape from the ordinary.  It has been extra ordinary lately (not to be confused with extraordinary.)  I do feel that new oomph on the horizon.. can you feel it?  Let’s build up to it.

7 Sites You Should Be Wasting Your Time On (Huffington Post) - The DS prides itself on being one of your daily internet time-wasters.  From one procrastinator to others, enjoy this HuffPo feature that this week features cats replacing balls in sporting events, Jim’ll paint it (this one has a special meaning for my family), and reasons why Seinfeld taught you everything you needed to know about life.  I’m not sure I can relate to that one.  I’m more of a Friends gal.

10 Worst Breakfasts to Feed Your Children (ActiveBeat) - Or yourself, really.  Be prepared to clean out your pantry and go to work and school hungry.

22 Flavored Liquors That Will Make You Angry (Buzzfeed) – So maybe there is a theme here and we’re not quite ready to let go of our anger and winter despair to lead a positive, more productive life.  It’s weird how things just come out like that.  Either way, this is a good list.

How to Brew Coffee Like a Professional Barista (Expert Enough) – I love my Keurig so much.  It’s so convenient and, I’m just enamored.  Still, I can’t help but feel guilty knowing it’s not a “real” cup of coffee, slow brewed like it used to be back in the days of inconvenience.  Now, when I go to a bona fide coffee shop, I’m worried I’ve become a coffee wimp.  This is a good place to start over.

Amanda Bynes Spotted With a Suspicious Cigarette (NY Daily News) - I’ve gone too long without mentioning this because Amanda Bynes has always been a non-factor in my life. She is getting pretty whack though, huh?

Have a good night.

Handling Your Meh Day with Cheerleaders, Acts of Kindness, and Sake

I need to be like this, everyday.

The Best Cheerleader (YouTube) – This is one of my all time favorites.  I just want to be that excited about pretty much anything.

TUESDAY HELPINGS:

Ah days have not been inspirational lately for the DS.  I found myself getting a little lazy with posting during my break, and have since been having trouble finding interesting things online to chat about.  It’s not you, it’s me.  I’ve hit a post-winter/pre-spring lull in energy, back to the grind, another sad sports loss, wah, wah, wah.  I am hitting that wall of, “if not now, when?” in many areas of my life, so I fully expect that will kick my ass into higher gear relatively soon.  At least I have an after-vacation vacation to look forward to, hence, tomorrow is my Friday.  I hope to start making you proud again this weekend.

Life in Your Early Twenties vs. Your Late Twenties (Buzzfeed) – We need this today.  Just look at it.

35 Little Acts of Kindness (Oprah) - Do one for someone, or read the whole list, feel good about it, and hope you are the recipient of one (remember, we’ll be better starting this weekend)

Sake: Hot or Cold? (The Daily Meal) – The age old question finally answered by two non-Japanese people.

Beyonce ‘Grown Woman’ Teaser (The Hollywood Gossip) – I’m sorry, there’s just nothing else worth talking about.

**It’s about time to put out the reach out for cool stuff.  If you have a blog or know of a blog or read an article 2 weeks ago that was kind of amusing and didn’t discuss something horrible, please send it along.  I like to share stuff that is funny or interesting or that only I + 2 other people care about.**

Tired Tuesday with New NKOTB, Douchey Donald Trump, and Revamping Your Wardrobe

Dressing for pregnancy, according to the expert, Donald Trump.

Donald Trump on Dressing a Baby Bump (CNN) - What a douche.

Image

All the credit goes to sodahead.com for this brilliance.

TUESDAY HELPINGS:

So clearly, it’s a slow news day.  Maybe by the time I post this, something more interesting will have happened that doesn’t involve North Korea.  I’m pretending not to think about that.

28 Shopping Tips to Take Your Wardrobe to the Next Level (Clutch Magazine) - It was a sad realization for me to look at my wardrobe and realize I’ve gone without for too long, in an effort to “save money” for Italy, a home, etc.  (Guess how much I ended up saving..not a ton!)  Result is, I look like a hobo.  It will take a while to build things back up, but I’ll be starting with these basic tips and trying not to get too overwhelmed.

Asian Soups (Food & Wine) – I am going through a serious Pho phase (recent restaurant adventure coming soon,) and the fact that it’s 25 degrees on April 2nd really isn’t helping me to get past it.  While we wait this weather BS out, make some hot pots of asian-inspired soup.

Image

Pho-real.

New Albums This Week (MSN Music) – There really is only one redeeming quality about Tuesday, and that’s that it’s new music day!  I’m posting these highlights for one very hot 1989 reason.  And, I’m tired and it’s still a slow news day.

Should All Women Heed Sheryl Sandberg’s Advice to ‘Lean In’? (NPR) – A dear friend brought up this book today, and maybe changed my mind about reading it.  While the right hand lady of Mark Zuckerberg turned me off during her press tour on various talk shows, she does present startling facts about just how big the gap is between men and women in the workplace.  I appreciate her message, that women should push to achieve whatever it is their dreams are, but I can’t ignore the fact that she believes she’s speaking to a broad audience, when perhaps not every working woman can relate to her COO position, Harvard education, or extremely well to-do lifestyle.  Then again, maybe they can aspire and be inspired?  That’s about all my brain can handle for tonight.  Did I mention since I started typing this earlier that I’ve been in a car accident?  Happy vacation to me.

Bow Down to Glitter Bombs, Alcoholic Bananas, and Bracketology

I’m sorry.  I can’t help it.  #DoubleFeature:

Snapshot: Beyonce for Shape Magazine April 2013 (The Fashion Bomb Blog) – My lady love is at it again.  Some call it overexposure.  I call it amazeballs.  Tomato/tomahtoe.

Beyonce | I Am : Bow Down/I Been On (iam.beyonce.com) – So when I saw the “bow down” picture posted on Bey’s Facebook and Instagram yesterday, even I thought, “K, that’s a little much.”  I got it in a marketing sense- with the whole “trailer” for her new tour and such, but what I didn’t spend enough time looking at was that it was a link to her new song ‘Bow Down’, which I think I may be in love with, but when it switches to ‘I Been On’, it gets a little weird.  Listen here!

MONDAY HELPINGS:

I woke up with uuber anxiety today, for no particular reason.  I actually had stress dreams about not turning in a high school assignment, one about not having the appropriate gluten free items in my lunch box, and something else rather laughable that I can’t remember now.  I think I have to take my own advice and really get into that meditation tonight!  So without further adieu..

Caffeine: How Much is too Much? (Detroit Free Press) - I wondered this myself today when I went for my 2nd coffee, usually an optional treat, today was a must.

Lindsay Lohan Gets Glitter Bombed Arriving Late to Court (laist.com) – That is probably the most magical thing that has happened to her in years.

8 Things You Can Turn Into Alcohol (Huffington Post) – What?  You’re not ready to think about alcohol again yet?  Don’t be silly.  While you may not have a Monkey Puzzle Tree in your backyard, you can probably find yourself some parsnips or bananas and get to work.

Image

This shhhh is….

March Madness 2013 Predictions (inthecapital.com) - I am less worried about my bracket picks, and more concerned about the fabulous names my brackets will have.  In my group, that is a win- best bracket name.  It may be the only win I have a shot at.

7 Foods to Fight Stress (mindbodygreen.com) - Dark chocolate is number one.  No mistake there.  I know what I’ll be filling my lunch box (both real and dreamed) with tomorrow!

The Secrets of Portion Control, Dancing for Health, and How Music Moves Your Bowels

Top story!

Kim Kardashian Finally Dresses Like a Pregnant Lady (EOnline) – At the premiere party of “her” movie, Tyler Perry’s Temptation, Kim finally showcases her baby bump glory.  This is the top story, mostly in reference to my February rant, of the noticeable avoidance Kim has had in posting recent photos and stories about herself as her appearance changes.  Embrace it, mama!

SUNDAY HELPINGS:

This week has the potential to be slightly difficult for me, because on Wednesday, my favorite, sanity-inspiring co-worker and mentor goes on leave for 2 months.  She is having surgery, and I will be lost without her, therefore, I’ll have to keep extra busy.  You can expect to see a lot of me here and on Twitter (@lindsaynhyatt).  Come find me!  The good news is, I woke up today with an other-worldly resolve.  Maybe it’s a miracle.  Whatever it is, I’ll take it. Here are some of the things I’ll be thinking about all week long.

Top Secrets of Portion Control (Cooking Light) - It’s common sense, but that doesn’t make it commonly easy to do.  I’ve fallen into the pit of giant-ass portions and it has really messed with my sense of what “one serving” of something is.  Even if it’s a salad or some fruit, portions do matter, and that will be a major focus this week for me.  Join me in this harrowing and humbling experience.

Dancing for Health (Go Ask Alice) – You may or may not have read that I tap danced this week.  It’s true.  And while tap dancing definitely isn’t the coolest thing in the world, it felt right.  I actually scared myself at how much I remember from the good old days of Dance Workshop.  So I am going to spend this week finding a “real” dance class- you know, for the really talented kids, and making it a part of my weekly workout.  Gotta make it fun- for realz.

Image

Courtesy of Tumblr. I still think it’s cool.

10 Delicious Gluten Free Dinners (Real Simple) – Yes, I’ve declared this before, but here I go again.  I know a gluten free lifestyle is the one for me.  I feel heaps (that’s my tribute to Australia) better living that way, and it’s just a matter of getting back into the swing of it.  I like these recipes because it thinks outside of the protein and veggies box.  That gets old after a few days.

How to Meditate (Gabrielle Bernstein) – It doesn’t matter your religion, your beliefs, your profession, or how much time you have every day, meditation should be a part of everyone’s life.  That’s a big statement, but there are actual scientific studies that show meditation is beneficial to decreasing stress and anxiety, and if practiced consistently, an overall happier mindset.  You can call it whack, but I challenge you (and me) to take a 30 day meditation challenge.  All you need is at least 10 minutes a day.  Try it.  Don’t be a chicken.

How Music Affects Your Brain (MSN) - We all need more music in our lives, for our heart, both hemispheres of the brain, and you got it- our bowel movements.  Why not?  Kick up the jams!

Rant of the Month : Grow Up Taylor Swift!

Really, Taylor?  Is she trying to lose respectable fans over the age of 12?  I really used to think Taylor Swift was a cool girl.  Sweet, innocent, an actual songwriter, and tongue-in-cheek country pop (about the only kind of country I can handle.)  Then, she started complaining about every male she’s ever met.  Okay, cute and girl power-y for a while.  Then it became apparent to me that maybe the guys being attacked in every TS song weren’t to blame, and it didn’t help that those songs were literally played at least once an hour, on almost any station format you could imagine.  The line in the sand is now drawn, forever, against woe-is-me Taylor Swift.

Image

Nearly 2 months after the Golden Globes (living under a rock, Tay?) she decides she is angry about a Tina Fey-Amy Poehler joke requesting that she stay away from Michael J. Fox’s teenage son, aka Mr. Golden Globe.  That’s the kid of a famous person that shuffles people off stage.  It was funny, people laughed.  I believe there was even talk after the show that Taylor addressed, that she was not in fact interested in MJF’s son.  Yet now, NOW, she is pissed at the “inappropriate” Golden Globe material.  What’s worse, is that my least favorite TV personality, Katie Couric, gave Taylor some comfort by saying, “There is a special place in hell for women who don’t support other women.”  Let me respond by saying: OMG.  On behalf of all women with a sense of humor, especially women that don’t appreciate you taking over the 3PM timeslot on ABC for your crappy talk show, Katie- shut the F up!

Image

The best part of my rant is how my favorite comedic ladies responded to Taylor’s panty twist.

Tina Fey, Amy Poehler Respond to Taylor Swift and “Hell” Comment (LA Times) – Please make special note of Amy.  I LOLed for that one.

Image

So, to conclude this month’s rant, may I please ask Taylor Swift to grow up, or find new ways to generate publicity?  We are all losing patience.
